The Teaching of Phonics Phase 1 In phase 1 children experience a wide range of activities and experiences that develop their early reading and writing skills, for example singing and saying rhymes, making and listening to music, listening to and joining in conversations, painting and pretend play. These activities help children take the first important steps towards reading and writing. Below are the sounds and words that children will learn at each phase. Phase 2 phase 2 pic 1 phase 2 pic 2 Phase 3 phase 3 pic 2 phase 3 pic 1   Phase 4   No new sounds are taught in this phase. The purpose of this phase is to consolidate children’s knowledge of graphemes in reading and spelling words containing adjacent consonants and polysyllabic words. The teaching materials in this phase provide a selection of suitable words containing adjacent consonants. These words are for using in the activities of practising blending for reading and segmenting for spelling. This is not a list to be worked through slavishly but to be selected from, as needed, for an activity. phase 4 pic 1 Phase 5 This phase follows the same format as the earlier phases but the teaching focuses on more complex aspects of spelling and reading, for example, the use of suffixes, longer words, and the introduction of the past tense. phase 5 pic 2 phase 5 pic 3 phase 5 pic 1   Phase 6 Helping your child at home with these sounds and words will support their learning. If you are unsure which phase your child is working on, please ask the class teacher.   Below are some links to phonics games and activities. https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/freeIndex.htm http://www.ictgames.com/literacy.html https://www.topmarks.co.uk/english-games/5-7-years/letters-and-sounds Phase 2 Captions  T-L-1097-Phase-2-Captions-and-Pictures-Powerpoint Phase 3 Yes and No questions  T-L-1253-End-Of-Phase-3-Yes-No-Questions-Powerpoint End of phase 3 sentences  t-l-206f-phase-3-sentence-cards-super-eco-colour End of phase 4 sentences  t-l-9593a-phase-4-sentence-cards—-super-eco-colour Phase 5 Yes and No questions  T-L-1251-End-Of-Phase-5-Yes-No-Questions-Powerpoint
